Investigative experience and training began in 1960 when Jim Humphrey started his career with the Phoenix Police Department. He first served as a uniform police officer, then as a plain-clothes detective and later as a Detective Sergeant. These assignments provided training and experience in the investigation and follow up on crimes ranging from thefts/burglaries and missing persons to sexual assaults and homicides. As a Detective Sergeant he supervised undercover detectives working vice and narcotics crimes.

Through competitive exams he was promoted to Sergeant, Lieutenant and then to Captain. Assignments included supervising the jail, the training academy, patrol operations and commanding the reserves. When he was promoted to the rank of Major he was assigned to manage and administer Investigations, the work of 350 detectives responsible for follow up investigation of all crimes occurring within the City of Phoenix. He finished his career with the Phoenix Police Department serving as the head of the Internal Affairs Bureau for 11 years where he was responsible for the investigation of complaints and crimes alleged to have been committed by police officers as well as any use of force with firearms in which they were involved.

He has owned and operated his own Law Enforcement Consulting and Private Investigative business since 1992 wherein he has been hired to work a variety of cases from surveillance of people suspected of insurance fraud and under other circumstances to complicated white collar frauds with multi national implications to administrative investigations involving allegations of sexual harassment, theft and other misfeasance. He has worked for private individuals, various state and local agencies, private attorneys, and for the National Football League as alternate security representative.
